NuGo Fan of the Month: Walter Hollander

Three years ago, Walter Hollander found out he had prediabetes. His doctor advised him to exercise more, lose 15 pounds, and switch to a lower sugar diet. Now, at the age of 71, he runs in the park twice per week with his wife and plays singles tennis once per week. He is newly retired, after spending over 45 years as a real estate developer and investor at Silver Builders Inc.

After his doctor’s recommendations, he began searching for a delicious low sugar protein bar. “I found that the NuGo Slim Crunchy Peanut Butter bar made with dark chocolate tasted close enough to a Snickers bar for me to enjoy eating them regularly,” said Walter. He eats two for breakfast and then one for an evening dessert. His wife eats a couple throughout the day simply because she loves the taste, not because of a medical need. They also like NuGo Slim Raspberry Truffle and Roasted Peanut.

Walter has seen significant results from his diet and exercise changes. “Since I have been eating NuGo Slim bars and increasing my exercise, my A1C number (part of a blood test), decreased from 6.5 down to 5.6,” explained Walter. “Medically speaking, 6.5 is right on the cusp of diabetes and 5.6 is clearly in the safe zone.”

In order to help the diabetes community, he is planning to fund prediabetes medical research that is going to test a new online educational interactive video. The experiment will test people who have been diagnosed with prediabetes and receive the standard instructions from their doctor compared to those people who receive online instructions.

“If it works, I hope to be able to radically decrease the percent of people with prediabetes who now eventually graduate to full blown adult diabetes,” Walter remarked. “If that happens, I will have fulfilled my life’s ambition of leaving the world a little tiny bit better than I found it. If it doesn’t work, at least I will know that I tried.”
