American Diabetes Association Alert Day

DiabetesAlertDayAmerican Diabetes Association Alert Day®, celebrated on March 25, is a day for people to conduct fast, free, and private online screenings for the warning signs of type 2 diabetes. Some of the biggest risk factors for type 2, or adult onset diabetes, include:

• Overweight children who have other risk factors for diabetes

• Overweight (BMI greater than 25) adults over age 45

• Adults with risk factors such as high blood pressure and low levels of HDL (“good”) cholesterol.

Even if you don’t fall into one of these risk categories, you should still take a free Risk Test. These tests not only help the user to determine their likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes, they also help the American Diabetes Association raise money for research and resources. For each person who completes a free online risk assessment between March 25 and April 25, 2014, Boar’s Head Brand® will donate $5 to the American Diabetes Association, up to $50,000.

Alert Day is an effective way to help people understand and assess their risk for developing type 2 diabetes, but what does it have to do with NuGo? 10 Easy Tips to Improve Your Nutrition

10easynutritiontipsWhether you want to make a change to eat more healthy foods during National Nutrition Month or anytime of the year, these small changes can make a big difference.

1. Read Labels. Always read the nutrition facts and ingredients before purchasing a product. It is important to note how many servings are in a package as well as the sugar and sodium content. Avoid foods with high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oils, and ingredients you can’t pronounce.

2. Plan Ahead. If you wait until you are hungry to decide what you will eat, you are more likely to make unhealthy choices.

3. Drink Water Instead of Sugary Drinks. Replace sugary drinks, like soda, juice, sports drinks, and flavored milk, with water.

4. Eat Breakfast. Choose a breakfast cereal that is high in fiber and low in sugar. If you don’t have time to eat at home, pack a healthy breakfast to bring with you. Don’t skip breakfast, the most important meal of the day!

5. Go to a Farmers Market. It is easy to eat more fruits and veggies when you are surrounded by fresh seasonal produce from local growers. Use the USDA National Farmers Market Directory to find ones in your area.

6. Replace Salt with Other Seasonings. Season your food with herbs, spices, and olive oil instead of salt.

7. Explore Alternative Grains and Seeds. Make new recipes with gluten-free grains and seeds, including quinoa, millet, and chia seeds. Try these 15 No-Bread Sandwiches, using veggies as buns.

8. Try Meatless Monday. There are many health benefits associated with eating a meatless meal at least one night per week.

Stop the Deception, Sign the NuGo Dark Chocolate Petition

DarkChocolateDark chocolate has several health benefits, but how “real” and how healthy is the dark chocolate you’re currently eating? You may be surprised to learn that in most cases, it’s not REAL Dark Chocolate as you’re led to believe.

Currently, the FDA only has labeling standards for milk and white chocolate. When labeling an imitation flavor milk or white chocolate, the FDA standard requires companies to use words like chocolaty and chocolate-flavored.

However, the FDA has no labeling standards when it comes to dark chocolate. Companies label dark chocolate coating without any acknowledgement that it is made with unhealthy vegetable coatings (usually palm oil) – something that would be required if the palm oil was used in milk or white chocolate.

Consequently, consumers looking for the health benefits and taste of REAL Dark Chocolate can be easily deceived. You can protect against this by reading product ingredient listings and avoiding those that contain palm oil or other vegetable fats.
