American Diabetes Association Alert Day

DiabetesAlertDayAmerican Diabetes Association Alert Day®, celebrated on March 25, is a day for people to conduct fast, free, and private online screenings for the warning signs of type 2 diabetes. Some of the biggest risk factors for type 2, or adult onset diabetes, include:

• Overweight children who have other risk factors for diabetes

• Overweight (BMI greater than 25) adults over age 45

• Adults with risk factors such as high blood pressure and low levels of HDL (“good”) cholesterol.

Even if you don’t fall into one of these risk categories, you should still take a free Risk Test. These tests not only help the user to determine their likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes, they also help the American Diabetes Association raise money for research and resources. For each person who completes a free online risk assessment between March 25 and April 25, 2014, Boar’s Head Brand® will donate $5 to the American Diabetes Association, up to $50,000.

Alert Day is an effective way to help people understand and assess their risk for developing type 2 diabetes, but what does it have to do with NuGo? Well, whether you have diabetes or are at risk for diabetes, you need to be careful about your sugar intake. However, that doesn’t mean you have to give up great tasting snacks. NuGo Family, NuGO Slim, and Smarte Carb are all delicious, healthy, protein-rich snack bars that will satisfy your cravings without affecting your blood sugar. 10 Easy Tips to Improve Your Nutrition

10easynutritiontipsWhether you want to make a change to eat more healthy foods during National Nutrition Month or anytime of the year, these small changes can make a big difference.

1. Read Labels. Always read the nutrition facts and ingredients before purchasing a product. It is important to note how many servings are in a package as well as the sugar and sodium content. Avoid foods with high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oils, and ingredients you can’t pronounce.

2. Plan Ahead. If you wait until you are hungry to decide what you will eat, you are more likely to make unhealthy choices.

3. Drink Water Instead of Sugary Drinks. Replace sugary drinks, like soda, juice, sports drinks, and flavored milk, with water.

4. Eat Breakfast. Choose a breakfast cereal that is high in fiber and low in sugar. If you don’t have time to eat at home, pack a healthy breakfast to bring with you. Don’t skip breakfast, the most important meal of the day!

5. Go to a Farmers Market. It is easy to eat more fruits and veggies when you are surrounded by fresh seasonal produce from local growers. Use the USDA National Farmers Market Directory to find ones in your area.

6. Replace Salt with Other Seasonings. Season your food with herbs, spices, and olive oil instead of salt.

7. Explore Alternative Grains and Seeds. Make new recipes with gluten-free grains and seeds, including quinoa, millet, and chia seeds. Try these 15 No-Bread Sandwiches, using veggies as buns.

8. Try Meatless Monday. There are many health benefits associated with eating a meatless meal at least one night per week.

9. Carry Healthy Snacks. When you carry healthy snacks with you, like nuts, fruit, and NuGo protein bars, you won’t resort to junk food.

10. Consult a Registered Dietitian. Read 10 Reasons You Should Be Talking to an RD, and Top 14 Reasons to Consult a Sports RD.

Enjoy the Taste of Eating Right with NuGo

EatingRightNNM2014The month of March marks another National Nutrition Month (NNM). The focused theme for this year is to “Enjoy the taste of eating right.” Sometimes, people stray from eating nutritious foods, citing taste as the main driver. But why should eating healthy not taste great? NuGo is extremely passionate about solving that problem by only supplying products that taste fantastic and deliver vital nutrition.

This is truly evident through our continued passion to only use real ingredients; underpinned by products that are certified gluten-free, Non-GMO and use clean protein coated in REAL Dark Chocolate.

So how do we maintain the luscious taste? The magic is in our REAL chocolate coatings. By only using cocoa butter and the non-fat portion of cocoa powder, we maintain all of the health benefits of chocolate and never compromise the decadent taste of exploding flavor in your mouth. Be sure to keep an eye out for vegetable fats, like palm kernel oil, and hydrogenated oils that may appear on the wrappers of other bars in the market. These ingredients truly compromise the nutritional value of the product and result in a dull flavor.

This year’s key messages for NNM focus on how to combine taste and nutrition that fit many dietary lifestyles. We offer products packed with protein that fit seamlessly into most dietary needs, including vegan, dialysis, OU Pareve, no soy, high fiber, and low sugar options.

Avoiding gluten is becoming ever more prominent as nearly 30% of American adults are now gluten-free. Whether you have celiac disease, gluten intolerance, or eat gluten-free for another reason, NuGo has you covered. We offer 17 gluten-free protein bars, some of which are packed with fiber.

We also recognize the importance of reducing sugar as part of an active lifestyle and have many options for you to choose from. To ensure your body has sustained energy, NuGo Family bars are certified as a low-glycemic snack. You don’t have to worry about sugar highs or a “crash” in blood sugar on our watch.

Next time your stomach is growling and you’re craving a snack, reach for a NuGo bar. We not only stand behind National Nutrition Month, we are passionate about nutrition everyday.
