NuGo Athlete of the Month: Anthony Salas

Anthony Salas has lost over 100 pounds as a plant-based triathlete. In 2012, “I weighed almost 280 pounds and was very sedentary,” said Anthony. He made the commitment to lose weight and get healthy. He cut out all dairy from his diet and shortly thereafter, decided to complete a triathlon. “I didn’t think it was possible but I was going to try anyways,” he said. That’s how he got into running.

He started running and ran his first 5K within three weeks. He completed the triathlon about six months later and went on to complete several more but running became his favorite discipline. He now runs marathons and ultra-marathons all on a plant-based diet.

Anthony has placed fourth overall in one 5K and placed in his age group in a couple of 5Ks but his biggest accomplishment in running was completing the Leadville Trail Marathon. The race is run in Leadville, CO, and starts at 10,200 ft above sea level and reaches a height of 13,185 feet above sea level. It’s also known as the race across the sky. His current goal, among completing another couple marathons and one 50K this year, is the Silver Rush 50 miles race in Leadville, CO.

Anthony’s favorite NuGo bar is NuGo Dark Chocolate Pretzel, and he explained how he uses NuGo bars.

“NuGo fits in really well with my plant-based lifestyle and training. I use NuGo bars during long races and long training runs. It brings variety to my fueling needs during a long race day.”

Outside of running, Anthony loves to hike, camp, and spend time with his wife and four kids. Follow Anthony’s journey through his Instagram, Twitter, and Blog.
